What is a Heavy Copper Board

A PCB with finished copper thickness ≥ 3oz (105μm) is a heavy copper board, achieved by electroplating or thick copper foil - carrying hundreds of amps on limited board space, it is the backbone of power and new-energy boards.

Copper Thickness3 - 20 oz finished copper
Conversion1 oz ≈ 35 μm, 20 oz ≈ 700 μm
ProcessElectroplated copper build-up + differential etch compensation
Via TreatmentResin plugging + electroplated capping
Quality StandardIPC Class 3 optional, cross-section archive
Typical UsesPower modules, OBC, charging piles, energy storage

Choose Copper Weight by Current

Current capacity is determined by copper weight and trace width together. The figures below assume a 30℃ temperature rise - final rating subject to engineering review.

3 oz

Low-current power
  • Carries about 20A (10mm trace width)
  • Suitable for standard power main loops
  • Typical: inverters, converters

6-10 oz

Motor & automotive
  • Carries about 35-55A
  • Resin plugging + capping for reliability
  • Typical: motor drives, OBC

20 oz

Busbar grade
  • Carries about 90A and above
  • Parallel vias share current and lower temperature
  • Typical: ESS PCS, charging pile busbars

Current Carrying Reference

Finished copperRef. currentTypical use
2 oz~15 APSU main power path
3 oz~20 AInverters / converters
6 oz~35 AMotor drives / chargers
10 oz~55 AOnboard charger (OBC)
20 oz~90 AESS / charging pile busbar
Typical values for 10mm trace width at 30℃ temperature rise. Actual rating is confirmed by engineering review.

Process Challenges & Our Solutions

Severe etching undercut makes trace tolerance hard to hold

Differential etching with width compensation plus free Gerber review

High-current vias heat up and threaten long-term reliability

Resin plugging with copper capping and parallel via grouping

Lamination alignment and thickness tolerance are hard to keep

IPC Class 3 acceptance with cross-section archive for every batch

Frequently Asked Questions

Finished copper from 3oz to 20oz. Above 6oz we recommend engineering review of trace width and etch compensation.
Yes. Wider spacing, larger annular rings and teardrops are recommended; our engineers will review your files free of charge.
Typically 8-12 days depending on copper weight and layer count; expedited options are available.
Yes. A common approach is heavy copper for power layers and 1oz for signal layers, mixing copper weights within one board.
High-current vias are filled with resin then capped with plated copper, preventing solder wicking inside the hole and localized heating - significantly improving via current reliability.
Four-wire high-current temperature-rise testing with a report is available on request; standard batches ship with 100% electrical testing.
